Cognitive-support supplements are having a moment.
The global nootropics market is projected to grow from $5.8 billion in 2026 to $13.3 billion by 2033 — a 12.7% CAGR — according to Grand View Research’s nootropics market analysis[1]. What that growth doesn’t show is how much harder this category is to formulate well than the ingredient list suggests.

That growth doesn’t show up in the ingredient list. It shows up in how much harder this category is to formulate well than a brand brief usually accounts for. Three problems come up on nearly every cognitive-support project: taste, dosing, and stability. All three interact with a fourth decision that brand teams often make before formulation even starts: format.
Many of the compounds formulators reach for in a focus-support brief are, on their own, bitter or chalky. Masking that without diluting the dose or changing how the body absorbs it is a real formulation constraint, not a garnish step at the end of development.
Format choice compounds the problem. Kerry’s 2026 Supplements Taste Charts for North America name gummies as the dominant non-pill delivery format, driven in part by pill fatigue[2]. A capsule can hide a bitter active behind a shell. A gummy or chewable can’t. Choosing the wrong format for a bitter cognitive-support blend doesn’t just make for an unpleasant first bite. It can force a reformulation months into development, after dosing and stability work is already locked in.
Cognitive-support formulas frequently stack multiple active ingredients in one capsule or tablet. Each one has its own optimal dose range, its own interaction profile with the others, and its own stability behavior over shelf life. Getting all of that to hold together, and stay accurate, through an 18-month shelf date is a different challenge than formulating a single-ingredient product.
That complexity shows up on the assay bench first, not on the label. Every additional active in a stack is another compound that has to hold its labeled potency for the full shelf life, not just at the moment of manufacture, and another set of interactions to rule out before a batch clears release testing.
Some of the most researched compounds in this category are also some of the least stable under heat, light, or humidity. A formula that tests perfectly on day one and degrades by month six isn’t a finished formula. It’s a formula that needs another development pass.
This is where format stops being a downstream decision and becomes a formulation choice in its own right. A blend that holds up in a low-humidity capsule may not survive the higher water content of a gummy matrix, which is one reason “just make it a gummy” is rarely as simple as a brand brief makes it sound.
Back-to-school season brings a predictable seasonal spike in interest in focus-support products, for students and for the parents, professionals, and lifelong learners around them. But the category’s momentum isn’t only seasonal.
NBJ’s 2025 Summit analysis names brain health among the industry’s breakout categories: roughly $548 million in projected market growth between 2024 and 2028, an 8.9% CAGR over that window, and a positioning shift from “cognitive enhancement” toward a lifelong wellness concern spanning age groups[3]. Cognitive and immunity products were already among the top-performing specialized categories by 2024 sales growth, alongside fitness/energy and weight management[3]. That’s a wider audience than a back-to-school push alone reaches, and a longer runway than one seasonal campaign.
